Clarification regarding the upcoming High Performance (HP) Training Camp on April 18th, 2026.

According to the OTTA Selection Criteria for the 2026 Canadian Championships, participation in designated training camps is a mandatory requirement for all athletes selected to represent Team Ontario in the U13, U15, and U19 categories.

Who is Obliged to Attend?

Mandatory participation applies to players who have secured their spot. At present that are:

Ontario Championships Finalists: Both the Champion and the Finalist (1st Runner Up) from the most recent Ontario Championships in their respective age categories.

This is not a new information. It is just repeated information that has been published in March before Ontario U13 Championship.

List of Pre-Qualified Athletes (Ontario Championship Finalists)

Based on the results of the 2026 Ontario Championships (held April 4–5), the following athletes have secured their positions and must attend the April 18th camp to maintain their eligibility for the Canadian Championships:

Category Champion Finalist (1st Runner Up)
U19 Boys Suhaan Gulati Lucas Zhang
U19 Girls Sunny Zhang Cindy Zhu
U15 Boys Clark Cui Denis Yang
U15 Girls Cindy Zhu Amber Xihan Lin
U13 Boys Daniel Liang Kevin Yang
U13 Girls Olivia Ziyi Wang Cindy Zhu

Key Requirements for Selected Players

    • Mandatory Training: Failure to attend the designated HP Training Camp without a prior medical exemption or approved emergency leave may result in the forfeiture of your spot on the provincial team. However, it is discretionary right of the OTTA to accept requests for exemption.
    • Membership: All athletes must be members in good standing with the Ontario Table Tennis Association.

Revised Announcement: Ranking Updates & Selection Timeline

To ensure the most accurate and up-to-date selection for the 2026 Canadian Championships, the OTTA is providing further clarification on how the May 24th Ranking List will be finalized.

Integration of WTT Mississauga Results, Nova Open and provincial events before May 23rd

The WTT Youth Contender Mississauga (May 15–18) is a critical event for our high-performance athletes. To ensure these results are reflected in the provincial selection:

Timing: The OTTA will publish the May Ontario Ranking List (ORL) one day after the ITTF enters the WTT Mississauga results into the international ranking system.

Target Date: We anticipate this publication will occur on May 24th, 2026.

Important Change to the Selection Window

Because the ITTF processing time is outside of our direct control, the publication of this list will likely occur less than two weeks before the TTCAN entry deadline (May 31st).

Policy Shift: As a result, the OTTA is moving the selection deadline from two weeks to one week prior to the registration cutoff.

Selection Basis: The May 24th list will be the official and final ranking used to determine the “Top 2” qualifiers for each category.

Update to Selection Process: Multi-Category Qualification

In light of the recent 2026 Ontario Championships results, we are adding a specific provision regarding athletes who have performed exceptionally well across multiple age groups.

Multi-Category Selection Policy

Any athlete who qualifies for the provincial team in more than one age category (who is eligible in multiple groups) will be granted a short consultation period.

Consultation Window: Qualified athletes will have seven days following the publication of this email to consult with their personal coaches and families.

Decision: The athlete must select the most appropriate team category they wish to represent at the Canadian Championships.

Automatic Succession: Once an athlete chooses their primary category, the spot they vacate in the other category will be automatically filled by the next highest-finishing athlete from the 2026 Ontario Championships standings.

Clarified Selection Flow

Step Action
1. Qualification Athlete finishes as a Finalist in multiple categories (e.g., U15 and U19).
2. Consultation 7 days window to discuss with coaches and select one category following this announcement.
3. Finalization Athlete confirms their choice to OTTA.
4. Backfill The next athlete in line from the Championships standings is promoted to the vacant spot.

Similar procedure will apply after publishing May Ontario Ranking List, but with 24 hours consultation window.
