One of the memorable moments of the Games was seeing sisters celebrating together on the podium. Olivia and Sophia Ziqing Wang captured the U15 Girls Doubles title, while Sophia Bai and Stephanie Bai also shared a podium finish, highlighting the important role that families continue to play in the development of Ontario table tennis.
Athlete Spotlight – Sophia Bai
For Sophia Bai (True North TTC), the Games marked a successful return to competition after missing the previous Ontario Summer Games because of injury.
“I am glad that I am back after missing the last Ontario Summer Games because of injury. Now, besides playing, I am also pursuing coaching. I already coach my own regular Saturday training group, and this summer I will complete both the NCCP Introduction to Competition and Competition Development coaching certifications.”
Sophia’s story reflects the pathway OTTA encourages—where athletes continue to grow not only as competitors but also as future coaches and leaders within the sport.
Building Toward the 2027 Canada Winter Games
The Ontario Summer Games also provided an important opportunity to evaluate coaches in preparation for the 2027 Canada Winter Games.
Based on coaching performances throughout the event, previous experience, and coaching certification achievements, OTTA has appointed Hongtao Chen as Team Leader and Head Coach for Team Ontario at the 2027 Canada Winter Games.
The appointment of the female coach will be announced following the completion of the selection tournament for the remaining two athlete positions. The selection event is expected to take place in October, with the exact dates to be announced in the coming weeks.
