Rock Hill, United States – Ontario athletes are making their mark at the 2025 Pan American Championships, which began on Sunday, October 12, in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The Canadian contingent, featuring Ontario’s Eugene Wang, Mo Zhang, and Sunny Zhang, have delivered several standout performances in the individual events.
Women’s Singles: Mo Zhang Guarantees a Medal
Veteran Mo Zhang (More Fun TTC) has once again demonstrated remarkable consistency, securing a medal and extending her two decades of excellent representation at the continental level. The fourth seed has been in formidable form, dropping only a single game on her path to the semi-finals:
- Round of 32: defeated Fabiola Diaz (PUR)
- Round of 16: defeated Paulina Vega (CHI)
- Quarter-final: defeated Sally Moyland (USA), giving up a single game in a close victory.
Mo Zhang’s journey culminates on Wednesday at 11:00 AM in a highly anticipated semi-final clash against the tournament’s first seed, Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi.
The Rise of Sunny Zhang: Biggest Surprise in Women’s Singles
Fifteen-year-old Sunny Zhang (Three 10), the runner-up from the last Canadian Championships, pulled off the biggest surprise in the Women’s Singles draw. Despite being unranked, Sunny displayed maturity and excellent technique to overcome two significantly more experienced opponents:
- Round of 64: defeated Eva Brito (DOM)
- Round of 32: defeated Angelica Arellano (COL)
Sunny’s impressive run was only halted in the Round of 16 by the eventual semi-finalist and top seed, Bruna Takahashi, who proved to be too big of an obstacle. Sunny’s breakthrough victories did not go unnoticed, as the ITTF announced her successes on their official social media channels.
Other Canadian representatives in women’s singles (Natiali Chen and Jiayi Nie) lost their respective first-round matches.
Men’s Singles: Eugene Wang Leads Canadian Effort
4th seed Eugene Wang was the most successful Canadian competitor in the Men’s Singles event. Eugene successfully reached the Round of 16 after defeating Ian Morales (GUA) in the Round of 32. However, his run came to an end after a tough match against Felip Arado (BRA), with the younger Brazilian player securing a 4-2 victory.
The other three Canadian players in the Men’s Singles draw were eliminated in the early rounds:
- Edward Ly and Simeon Martin both lost their first matches.
- Zexuan Wang won his first-round match against Fernando Alfar (ESA) before falling in the Round of 32.
Ontario Table Tennis congratulates all athletes for their hard work and dedication, particularly Mo Zhang for securing a medal and Sunny Zhang for her outstanding performance that signals a bright future for Canadian table tennis.
